Learn how to make the ultimate air fryer baked potato for a perfectly crispy skin and a light, fluffy interior every time. This method is much faster than using a traditional oven.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Medium Russet Potatoes
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil (or avocado oil)
  • 1 Teaspoon Coarse Salt (like Kosher salt)
  • Water (for pre-soaking, optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the potatoes well under running water. Scrub the skin thoroughly to remove any dirt.
  2. Dry the potatoes completely with a paper towel. Moisture prevents crisping.
  3. Prick each potato 6 to 8 times deeply all over using a sharp fork or knife. This releases steam and prevents explosions.
  4. Rub the entire surface of each potato with the olive oil.
  5. Sprinkle the coarse salt generously over the oiled skin. This draws out moisture and helps create a crisp crust.
  6. Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).
  7. Place the prepared potatoes in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Do not overcrowd the basket. Work in batches if necessary.
  8. Cook for 30 to 45 minutes, depending on potato size. Check for doneness at 30 minutes by squeezing gently; the center should feel soft.
  9. Flip the potatoes halfway through the cooking time for even crisping.
  10. Once cooked, carefully remove the potatoes. Slice them open immediately and fluff the inside with a fork. Serve hot with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For an extra fluffy inside, you can soak the washed potatoes in cold water for 30 minutes, then dry them completely before oiling.
  • Russet potatoes work best due to their high starch content, which yields a fluffier texture.
  • If your air fryer runs hot, start checking for doneness a few minutes earlier.
  • If you prefer a thinner, crispier skin, you can lightly pierce the skin again after the first 15 minutes of cooking.
