Make this easy apple crumble recipe for a comforting dessert with tender spiced apples and a buttery, crisp topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for apples)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish or a similar sized pie plate.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the 1/4 cup granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, ginger, and salt for the topping.
  4. Cut in the cold butter cubes using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining. Do not overmix.
  5. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  7. Let the crumble cool for at least 15 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • For an extra crunchy topping, chill the topping mixture for 10 minutes before sprinkling it over the apples.
  • Serve this warm apple crumble with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream.
  • If your apples are very sweet, reduce the sugar in the filling to 2 tablespoons.
