This apple crumble with an oat topping is a classic fall dessert. It is easy to make and features seasonal apples with a simple, crunchy oat topping. This warm, comforting, and relatively quick dessert will make your house smell like fall.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 6 cups)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  5. Add the cold butter pieces to the flour mixture. Use your fingertips or a pastry blender to cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  7. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and bubbly.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Fuji are good choices.
  • You can add a handful of chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the topping for extra crunch.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
