Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out in an even layer.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, prepare the crumble topping. Whisk together the 1 cup flour, brown sugar, oats, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.
  5. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture. Press lightly.
  7. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  8. Let the crumble cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm.

Notes

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor.
  • For an extra crunch, add 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumble topping mixture.
  • This crumble pairs wonderfully with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
