Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened apple cider
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the topping: 1/2 cup granulated sugar mixed with 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 12-count donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk the granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, apple cider, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix; a few small lumps are fine.
  5. Spoon or pipe the batter evenly into the prepared donut pan, filling each mold about two-thirds full.
  6. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. While the donuts are still warm, carefully remove them from the pan. Immediately dip both sides of each warm donut into the cinnamon-sugar topping, pressing gently so the sugar adheres.
  8. Place the coated donuts on a wire rack to cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • For the best moisture, do not overbake the donuts. Check them right at the 9-minute mark.
  • If you do not have buttermilk, you can make a substitute by mixing 1/2 cup of regular milk with 1/2 teaspoon of white vinegar or lemon juice and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • You can substitute the apple cider with store-bought or homemade apple cider reduction for a more intense flavor.
