Make restaurant-quality blackened salmon quickly using a simple homemade spice blend and skillet searing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 (6 ounce) salmon fillets, skin removed
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Mix paprika, thyme, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper in a small bowl to create the seasoning blend.
  2. Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels.
  3. Generously coat all sides of each salmon fillet with the spice blend, pressing the seasoning firmly onto the fish.
  4. Heat the avocado oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet (cast iron works best) over medium-high heat until the oil shimmers.
  5. Carefully place the seasoned salmon fillets in the hot skillet, ensuring they do not touch.
  6. Sear for 4 to 5 minutes without moving them to develop a dark crust.
  7. Flip the fillets gently. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
  8. Remove from heat and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a less spicy result, reduce the cayenne pepper amount or omit it entirely.
  • If you prefer baking, place seasoned fillets on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 400°F for 12 to 15 minutes.
  • Serve this salmon with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for brightness.
