Make a smooth, rich chocolate buttercream frosting quickly. This recipe yields a fluffy texture perfect for cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Place the softened butter in a large bowl. Beat the butter with an electric mixer until it is light and creamy, about 2 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and cocoa powder to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  3. Add the vanilla extract, milk, and salt. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high. Beat for 3 to 5 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  4. If the frosting is too thick, add milk one teaspoon at a time. If it is too thin, add powdered sugar one tablespoon at a time.
  5. Use immediately to frost your cooled cakes or cupcakes.

Notes

  • For a fudgier texture, reduce the milk by one tablespoon and add one ounce of melted, cooled semi-sweet chocolate during step 3.
  • If you prefer an old-fashioned style, substitute the milk with 1/4 cup of hot water or strong brewed coffee.
  • Sift your dry ingredients to prevent lumps in the final product.
