Ingredients
Scale
6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1/4 cup granulated sugar (for apples)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for apples)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar (for topping)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and lemon juice. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt for the topping. Mix these dry ingredients well.
Cut in the cold butter cubes using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining. Do not overmix.
Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the apples in the baking dish. Press lightly.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly and tender when pierced with a fork.
Let the crisp cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy this warmth!
Notes
For an extra layer of flavor, you can add 1/4 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the crisp topping mixture.
If your apples are particularly tart, you may want to increase the granulated sugar slightly for the filling.
We love serving this with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream.
