This classic American Goulash recipe brings together ground beef, macaroni, and a rich tomato sauce for a hearty, comforting one-pot meal. It is an easy, budget-friendly dish perfect for a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Stir in chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Pour in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, and beef broth. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, paprika, and black pepper.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  7. Stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni. Increase heat to medium-low, cover, and continue to simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until macaroni is tender, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  8. Remove from heat and let stand for a few minutes before serving.
  9. Serve hot, topped with shredded cheddar cheese if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a bay leaf during the simmering process and remove it before serving.
  • If the goulash becomes too thick, add a little more beef broth or water to reach your desired consistency.
  • Leftovers store well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
