  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, cook ground beef and Italian sausage over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  4. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water.
  5. Season with parsley, salt, basil, oregano, and pepper.
  6. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  7. While the sauce simmers, cook lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  8. In a medium bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, parsley, salt, and pepper.
  9. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  10. Spread 1 cup of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  11. Arrange 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  12. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
  13. Top with one-third of the mozzarella cheese.
  14. Spoon 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce over the mozzarella.
  15. Repeat layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, meat sauce.
  16. Add a final layer of noodles, remaining ricotta mixture, remaining mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese.
  17. In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  18. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  19. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
  20. Cook, stirring constantly, until sauce thickens.
  21. Season with salt and nutmeg.
  22. Pour béchamel sauce over the top of the lasagna.
  23. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  24. Remove foil and bake for another 25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown.
  25. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of sugar to the tomato sauce.
  • If you prefer a spicier lasagna, add red pepper flakes to the meat sauce.
  • Béchamel sauce adds a creamy texture, but you can omit it if you prefer a simpler lasagna.
  • Ensure your lasagna noodles are cooked al dente to avoid mushy lasagna.
  • Letting the lasagna rest before slicing helps it hold its shape.
