Bake a classic, hearty beef meat pie with a perfectly flaky crust. This recipe delivers a deeply savory filling, making it ideal comfort food for any family dinner or gathering. You will achieve a satisfying texture in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 sheets ready-made pie crust (for double crust)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion, carrots, and celery to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the flour, cooking for one minute.
  4. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and red wine, if using. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Cook until the gravy thickens slightly, about 5 minutes. Let the filling cool completely.
  6. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  7. Line a 9-inch pie dish with one sheet of pie crust. Trim the edges.
  8. Pour the cooled meat filling into the crust.
  9. Top with the second crust. Crimp the edges to seal the pie. Cut several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  10. Brush the top crust lightly with the beaten egg wash.
  11. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  12. Let the meat pie cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For an extra flaky crust, keep all your dough ingredients very cold.
  • If you prefer a hand pie size, use smaller individual pastry shells.
  • Cooling the filling completely prevents the bottom crust from becoming soggy.
  • Serve this pie with mashed potatoes or steamed greens.
