This recipe makes classic French toast, crispy on the outside, custardy on the inside. It is perfect for a simple, delicious weekend breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of bread, 1-inch thick (brioche or challah recommended)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Fresh berries, for serving (optional)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Whisk eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon in a shallow dish.
  2. Dip each bread slice into the egg mixture, coating both sides. Do not oversoak.
  3. Melt butter in a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  4. Cook bread slices for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Serve immediately with maple syrup, berries, and powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for best results. Fresh bread can become soggy.
  • Adjust cooking time based on your preferred crispiness.
  • You can keep cooked French toast warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven while you finish cooking the rest.
