A straightforward recipe for a classic tuna melt, featuring creamy tuna salad nestled between slices of perfectly melted cheese and grilled bread. This comforting sandwich is easy to make and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (5 ounces each) tuna, drained
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped celery
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped red onion
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices bread
  • 4 slices cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or American work well)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, celery, red onion, relish, and Dijon mustard. Stir until well combined.
  2. Season the tuna salad with salt and pepper to your liking.
  3. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  4. Place two slices of bread, butter-side down, in a non-stick skillet or on a griddle over medium heat.
  5. Top each slice of bread with two slices of cheese.
  6. Divide the tuna salad evenly between the two cheese-topped bread slices, spreading it over the cheese.
  7. Top the tuna salad with the remaining two slices of bread, butter-side up.
  8. Cook for 3-5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
  9. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of paprika or a dash of hot sauce to the tuna salad.
  • Feel free to experiment with different types of bread and cheese to find your favorite combination.
  • Ensure your skillet is not too hot to prevent the bread from burning before the cheese melts.
