Learn to make incredibly creamy and buttery mashed sweet potatoes. This recipe uses maple syrup and cinnamon for a comforting flavor, perfect for any meal, especially holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place the sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a pinch of salt.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes very well in a colander. Let them sit for a minute or two to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
  4. Return the drained potatoes to the empty hot pot.
  5. Add the heavy cream, butter, maple syrup, cinnamon, salt, and pepper to the pot.
  6. Using a potato masher or a hand mixer on low speed, mash or mix until the sweet potatoes are smooth and creamy. Do not overmix.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For an extra silky texture, pass the mashed potatoes through a food mill or ricer after boiling.
  • If you prefer a savory version, skip the maple syrup and cinnamon. Add 2 tablespoons of sour cream and 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme.
  • For a holiday presentation, sprinkle toasted pecans on top before serving.
