Ingredients
Scale
4 large firm apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pinch of salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup rolled oats (optional, for extra crunch)
1/2 cup hot water or apple cider
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a small baking dish.
Wash the apples. Use an apple corer or a small knife to carefully remove the core from the top of each apple, leaving about a half-inch base so the filling stays inside. Do not cut all the way through the bottom.
In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir in the oats if you are using them.
Place the apples in the prepared baking dish.
Divide the sugar mixture evenly among the cored apples, packing it into the center cavity.
Top each apple with a few small pieces of the butter.
Pour the hot water or apple cider into the bottom of the baking dish around the apples. This creates steam to keep them moist.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork but still hold their shape.
Carefully remove from the oven. Spoon any sauce from the bottom of the dish over the apples before serving warm.
Notes
You can substitute maple syrup for some of the brown sugar for a different flavor profile.
If your apples are very tart, you may wish to increase the brown sugar slightly.
Serve plain for a lighter dessert or top with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
