Make soft, chewy, restaurant-style breadsticks at home using this easy recipe, topped with a rich garlic parmesan butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115 degrees F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add 2 3/4 cups of flour, salt, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add small amounts of extra flour if the dough is too sticky.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Punch down the dough gently. Roll or stretch the dough into a large rectangle, about 1/2 inch thick.
  7. Cut the dough into strips, about 1 inch wide and 6 to 8 inches long. Place the strips on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a small space between them.
  8. Bake for 10 to 14 minutes, or until the breadsticks are lightly golden brown.
  9. While the breadsticks bake, prepare the topping: In a small bowl, mix the 1/4 cup melted butter, minced garlic, dried parsley, and grated Parmesan cheese.
  10. Remove the hot breadsticks from the oven. Immediately brush the garlic butter mixture evenly over all the breadsticks. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra cheesy breadsticks, sprinkle an additional tablespoon of Parmesan cheese over the buttered breadsticks immediately after brushing them with the topping.
  • If you prefer a softer crust, place a shallow pan of water on the bottom rack of the oven while baking.
  • You can make the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before the second rise.
