Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (about 1 pound) French bread or challah, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups eggnog (full-fat recommended)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter for greasing the dish

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the eggnog mixture slowly and evenly over the bread cubes, making sure all pieces are saturated.
  5. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, allowing the bread to fully absorb the liquid.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Remove the dish from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before baking to let it come toward room temperature.
  8. Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the bake rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for the best texture; it absorbs the liquid better without becoming too mushy.
  • For an extra festive touch, sprinkle powdered sugar or a dusting of nutmeg on top just before serving.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, use a high-quality, rich eggnog.
  • This bake keeps well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days after cooling.
