This make-ahead Eggnog French Toast Bake is a holiday breakfast hero. It combines tender bread with rich eggnog and spices, baked to golden perfection. It’s the perfect dish for a relaxed Christmas morning or any festive brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (1 pound) challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3 cups eggnog
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Butter, for greasing
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Pour the eggnog mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Press down gently with a spatula if needed.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the bread to fully absorb the liquid.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the French toast bake is puffed, golden brown, and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let it cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a good quality eggnog.
  • If you don’t have challah or brioche, a sturdy white bread can be used, but the texture will be slightly different.
  • You can add a splash of rum or brandy to the eggnog mixture for an adult version.
