Ingredients
Scale
1 pound tuna steak, sushi-grade
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and black pepper to taste
4 slices of your favorite bread
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/4 cup finely chopped celery
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Butter for grilling
Instructions
If using tuna steak, lightly coat with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Sear in a hot pan for 1-2 minutes per side for rare, or longer for your desired doneness. Let it rest, then flake it into chunks.
If making tuna salad, combine flaked tuna steak (or canned tuna, drained) with mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, celery, red onion, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper.
Butter one side of each slice of bread.
Spread tuna salad or place flaked tuna steak on the unbuttered side of two bread slices.
Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
Grill the sandwiches in a skillet or on a griddle over medium heat until golden brown and the filling is heated through.
Slice in half and serve immediately.
Notes
For a classic tuna salad sandwich, you can skip the searing step and use canned tuna.
Add your favorite additions like pickles, capers, or a pinch of paprika to the tuna salad.
Ensure your tuna steak is sushi-grade if you plan to sear it rare.
