Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound cubed ham
  • 12 slices white bread, crusts removed and cubed
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the cubed ham evenly over the bottom of the dish.
  3. Layer the bread cubes over the ham.
  4. Sprinkle the cheddar and Swiss cheeses over the bread layer.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, dry mustard, salt, and pepper.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the cheese and bread layers. Press down gently to submerge the bread.
  7. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or foil.
  8. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  9. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove the covering.
  10. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is set and lightly golden brown on top.
  11. Let it stand for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can lightly toast the bread cubes before assembling.
  • You can substitute Gruyère cheese for Swiss for a nuttier taste.
  • Make sure the bread soaks up all the liquid for the best texture.
