Ingredients
Scale
1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1-2 drops red food coloring
For the Glaze:
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2-3 tablespoons milk
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a donut pan or line it with non-stick spray.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vinegar, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until well combined.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
Spoon the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about two-thirds full.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the donuts cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
While the donuts cool, prepare the glaze. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth.
Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until combined.
Add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the glaze reaches your desired consistency.
Once the donuts are completely cool, dip them into the glaze, or drizzle the glaze over the tops.
Let the glaze set before serving.
Notes
For a more vibrant red color, you can add a little more red food coloring.
If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of milk and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes.
You can use a piping bag to drizzle the glaze for a more decorative finish.
