Prepare this easy, make-ahead red wine sangria featuring seasonal cranberry and orange flavors with warm spices, perfect for holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (750 ml) bottle dry red wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1 cup brandy
  • 1/2 cup orange liqueur (like Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 whole star anise
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 crisp apple, cored and sliced
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda, chilled (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine the red wine, brandy, orange liqueur, orange juice, sugar, cinnamon stick, and star anise.
  2. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Add the sliced orange, cranberries, and apple slices to the mixture.
  4. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. When ready to serve, remove the cinnamon stick and star anise if desired.
  6. Pour the sangria into glasses filled with ice. Top each glass with a splash of chilled sparkling water or club soda.

Notes

  • You can substitute the sugar with maple syrup for a slightly different sweetness profile.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, replace the wine and brandy with cranberry juice and sparkling white grape juice.
  • Prepare the fruit mixture and wine base a day ahead for the best flavor infusion.
