Make rich, fudgy brownies with a bright, tangy lemon flavor, topped with a simple, sharp lemon glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter and granulated sugar together until combined.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract, lemon juice, and lemon zest.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. A toothpick inserted near the center should come out with moist crumbs attached, not wet batter.
  8. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  9. Prepare the glaze: Whisk the powdered sugar and 1 to 2 tablespoons of lemon juice until smooth and pourable. Add more lemon juice slowly to reach the desired consistency.
  10. Drizzle or spread the glaze evenly over the cooled brownies. Let the glaze set before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • For extra fudginess, reduce the flour by one tablespoon.
  • Use fresh lemon juice for the best, brightest flavor.
  • If you prefer a less intense lemon flavor, reduce the lemon zest to two teaspoons.
