- 1 pound penne pasta
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or more, to taste)
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- Salt to taste
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
- Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving (optional)
- Cook penne pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain, reserving about 1 cup of pasta water.
- While the pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes to the skillet. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
- Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld. Season with salt to taste.
- Add the drained penne pasta to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to coat the pasta evenly.
- If the sauce seems too thick, add a little of the reserved pasta water, a tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves and grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to control the spice level.
- For a richer sauce, you can add a splash of heavy cream or a knob of butter at the end.
- This dish is excellent with a side salad or crusty bread.
