A simple recipe for tender, flavorful pork shoulder steaks marinated in a sweet soy mixture, suitable for grilling or baking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pork shoulder steaks (about 1 inch thick)
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, vegetable oil, and black pepper to create the marinade.
  2. Place the pork steaks in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the steaks, ensuring they are fully coated.
  3. Refrigerate and marinate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  4. If grilling: Preheat your grill to medium heat (about 350-400°F). Remove steaks from the marinade, letting excess drip off. Grill for 5-7 minutes per side until the internal temperature reaches 145°F.
  5. If baking: Preheat your oven to 400°F. Place steaks in a baking dish. Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the internal temperature reaches 145°F.
  6. Let the steaks rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, reserve a small amount of marinade before adding the raw meat and brush it onto the steaks during the last few minutes of cooking.
  • Pork shoulder steaks benefit from longer marination times.
  • Serve with coleslaw or baked beans for a classic cookout meal.
