Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt, plus more for sprinkling
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Pour half of the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan.
  7. To make the salted caramel, combine the softened butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and water in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  8. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly.
  9. Once boiling, cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens and turns a deep amber color.
  10. Remove from heat and stir in the sea salt and vanilla extract. Be careful, as the caramel will be very hot.
  11. Drizzle half of the salted caramel over the brownie batter in the pan.
  12. Dollop the remaining brownie batter over the caramel.
  13. Drizzle the remaining salted caramel over the top layer of brownie batter.
  14. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the caramel into the brownie batter.
  15. Sprinkle a little extra sea salt over the top.
  16. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached.
  17. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • For a fudgier brownie, you can reduce the baking powder to 1/4 teaspoon.
  • If you prefer a stronger caramel flavor, you can add an extra pinch of sea salt to the caramel.
  • Ensure your caramel reaches a deep amber color for the best flavor.
