Make this simple, sweet, and salty toffee using only a few ingredients. It bakes quickly and sets up into a crunchy chocolate-covered bark perfect for holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 40 crackers)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or other nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the butter is melted and the mixture comes to a boil. Let it boil for exactly one minute, stirring continuously.
  3. Pour the hot sugar mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, making sure to coat them completely.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes. The toffee should look bubbly.
  5. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let it sit for 5 minutes to melt the chocolate.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the crackers using an offset spatula. If using nuts, sprinkle them over the melted chocolate now.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
  8. Break the toffee into irregular pieces before serving or storing.

Notes

  • For a different flavor, use milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet.
  • If you want a peppermint flavor, sprinkle crushed candy canes over the chocolate immediately after spreading it.
  • Store the finished toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
