Make a classic fall spread with ease. This slow cooker recipe transforms apples into a rich, smooth, and spiced butter. It is a delicious, fragrant, and simple fall project with minimal active work.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 pounds apples (such as Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Gala), peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 1 cup apple cider or water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large slow cooker.
  2. Stir well to coat the apples evenly with the spices and sugar.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until the apples are very soft and easily mashable.
  4. Uncover and stir the apple mixture.
  5. For a smooth apple butter, use an immersion blender to blend directly in the slow cooker until desired consistency is reached. Alternatively, carefully transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
  6. Return the blended apple butter to the slow cooker.
  7. Cook on low for another 1-2 hours, uncovered, to allow the apple butter to thicken and deepen in color. Stir occasionally.
  8. Allow the apple butter to cool completely before transferring to airtight jars.
  9. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks, or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of sugar based on the sweetness of your apples and your preference.
  • For a chunkier apple butter, mash the apples with a potato masher instead of blending.
  • You can add a splash of vanilla extract at the end for extra flavor.
  • Sterilize jars before filling if you plan to store the apple butter for an extended period.
