Ingredients

Scale
  • 3-pound pork shoulder (Boston butt)
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Hamburger buns, for serving

Instructions

  1. Place the sliced onion in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  2. Trim any excess fat from the pork shoulder and place it on top of the onions.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, and garlic powder.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture over the pork shoulder. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-5 hours, until the pork is tender and easily shreds.
  6. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board or in a large bowl.
  7. Using two forks, shred the pork.
  8. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and stir it into the sauce.
  9. Serve the pulled pork on hamburger buns, topped with extra barbecue sauce if desired.

Notes

  • For an extra smoky flavor, you can add a teaspoon of liquid smoke to the sauce mixture.
  • Adjust the amount of brown sugar and barbecue sauce to your preferred sweetness and spice level.
  • This pulled pork can be made ahead of time and reheated.
