Make this quick, flavorful one-pan meal featuring sausage coated in a sticky honey garlic sauce served over pasta. It is a simple weeknight dinner solution.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound smoked sausage or kielbasa, sliced into rounds
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon cold water (slurry)
  • 8 ounces dried pasta (penne or rotini work well)
  • 1/2 cup reserved pasta water
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta according to package directions until al dente. Before draining, reserve about 1/2 cup of the starchy pasta water. Drain the pasta and set aside.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced sausage and cook until browned on both sides, about 4 to 5 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add the chopped onion to the same skillet and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth, honey, soy sauce, and apple cider vinegar. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Whisk the cornstarch slurry into the simmering sauce. Stir constantly until the sauce thickens slightly, about 1 minute. This creates the sticky glaze.
  6. Return the cooked sausage to the skillet. Add the drained pasta to the skillet.
  7. Toss everything together to coat the sausage and pasta evenly with the sauce. If the sauce seems too thick, add a few tablespoons of the reserved pasta water until you reach your desired consistency.
  8. Season with salt and pepper as needed.
  9. Serve immediately, garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • You can substitute Italian sausage for smoked sausage, but you may need to drain excess fat after browning.
  • For a spicier sauce, add 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes when you add the garlic.
  • If you do not have chicken broth, you can use water, but the flavor will be less deep.
