Make these amazingly soft and fluffy Southern-Style Sweet Potato Biscuits from scratch. They are wonderfully moist, slightly sweet, and perfect served warm with our homemade Cinnamon Honey Butter for a comforting breakfast or holiday side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1 cup mashed cooked sweet potato (about 1 large sweet potato)
  • For Cinnamon Honey Butter: 1/2 cup softened butter, 1/4 cup honey, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the mashed sweet potato until just combined.
  5. Pour in the cold buttermilk. Mix gently with a fork until a shaggy dough forms. Do not overmix.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead 3 to 4 times until it comes together. Pat or roll the dough to about 3/4 inch thickness.
  7. Use a biscuit cutter (about 2 inches) to cut out the biscuits. Place them close together on the prepared baking sheet for softer sides, or further apart for crispier edges.
  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  9. While the biscuits bake, prepare the butter: In a small bowl, beat together the softened butter, honey, and cinnamon until light and fluffy.
  10. Serve the warm sweet potato biscuits immediately with generous amounts of the Cinnamon Honey Butter.

Notes

  • Cook your sweet potato until very soft. Drain any excess moisture before mashing it for the best dough consistency.
  • For the fluffiest results, keep all wet and cold ingredients, especially the buttermilk, very cold.
  • If you prefer taller biscuits, pat the dough to 1 inch thick before cutting.
