Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes (about 4 large)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for the base)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar (for the topping)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for the topping)
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes, 1/2 cup brown sugar, milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix well until smooth.
  3. Stir in the 1/2 cup melted butter until just combined into the sweet potato mixture.
  4. Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. To make the topping, whisk together the flour and 1 cup brown sugar in a separate bowl.
  6. Cut in the 1/2 cup softened butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Stir in the chopped pecans.
  8. Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the sweet potato base.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is hot throughout.
  10. Let it cool slightly before you serve it warm.

Notes

  • You can cook the sweet potatoes by baking or boiling them until very tender.
  • For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk in the base.
  • Taste the base mixture before adding the topping; adjust spices to your preference.
  • If you prefer a softer pecan topping, mix the pecans into the crumb mixture before sprinkling.
