Make this easy, comforting ground beef tater tot casserole for a simple weeknight family dinner. It features a creamy beef base topped with crispy tater tots.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 bag (about 32 ounces) frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Brown the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, and pepper into the skillet with the beef mixture. Cook until heated through.
  4. Spread the beef mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the beef layer.
  6. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese and meat mixture.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a cheeseburger variation, add 1/2 teaspoon of mustard powder to the meat mixture.
  • You can prepare this dish ahead of time; cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Add 10 minutes to the baking time if baking straight from the refrigerator.
  • Use cream of chicken soup instead of mushroom soup if preferred.
