About Us: Our Story of Love, Life, and the Joy of Cooking

Hello and welcome to Whisk Daily! We’re Kenji and Amaya, and we’re so happy you’ve found our little corner of the internet. We think of this space as the kitchen of our hearts, opened up for all to share.

Ours is not just a story about food : it’s a love story that has been simmering for over forty years. We met in our beautiful hometown of Kyoto, Japan. Kenji, then a young man with a kind smile, would often visit the small, traditional eatery run by Amaya’s family. He playfully says he first fell in love with a comforting bowl of their ramen, but it was truly Amaya’s warmth and the passion in her voice as she spoke about her family’s recipes that captured his heart.

Food has always been the language of our love. In our early days of courtship, we didn’t just go to restaurants; we explored vibrant markets, marveling at the fresh produce and dreaming up dishes we could create together. Kenji, an enthusiastic home cook since his childhood, found his greatest joy in recreating Amaya’s family recipes—a gesture that spoke more than words ever could. For Amaya, sharing the culinary secrets passed down through her generations was the ultimate act of trust and affection.

Our kitchen has always been the heart of our home. It’s where we’ve celebrated milestones, soothed heartaches with warm soup, and lovingly passed down our passion for cooking to our children. Every meal tells a story, a memory of a time and place, a feeling we shared.

For decades, our life was rooted in the serene traditions of Kyoto. But life, much like a good recipe, can have unexpected and wonderful turns. In early 2024, at the ages of 72 and 68, we packed our bags and our favorite kitchen knives and made the biggest move of our lives—to New York City. Why? For the most precious reason of all: to be closer to our children and our wonderful grandchildren.

Moving from the peaceful temples of Kyoto to the vibrant, bustling streets of New York was a profound change. We found ourselves in a magnificent new world, a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. It was exciting, a little overwhelming, but above all, incredibly inspiring.

This is why we created Whisk Daily.

This blog is our way of bridging two worlds. It’s a love letter to our past, preserving the traditional Japanese recipes that have nourished our family for generations. It’s also a diary of our new chapter, documenting our culinary adventures as we explore the diverse flavors of our new home. From perfecting a classic dashi broth to attempting our very first New York-style bagel, we’re doing it all with love.

Here at Whisk Daily, we believe that cooking is more than just sustenance; it’s about connection. It’s about the story behind the dish, the hands that prepared it, and the people you share it with. We invite you into our kitchen to be a part of our journey. We hope our recipes bring a taste of our story into your home and inspire you to create your own memories, one delicious meal at a time.

With love and gratitude,

Kenji & Amaya
